FAQS

I am a Brown University student. How can I get involved with the BULR?

Thanks for your interest! We principally recruit for open positions in the fall semester, and applications for the 2023-24 are now closed. However, all Brown undergraduates are encouraged to submit long-form papers during our submission cycles (still accepting!), which also take place at the beginning of each semester.

What do you look for in Law Review paper submissions?

We publish papers that discuss issues of legal significance that articulately present a well-developed and well-supported argument. In the past, we have published papers on a wide variety of topics, including biomedical law, free speech, international refugee law, and tribal sovereignty.

We look for essays that are between 2,000 and 6,000 words long, although we give full consideration to all submissions. Papers may be interdisciplinary but must primarily focus on the interpretation and/or implementation of law. Papers produced for past classes, internships, jobs, and/or independent projects are all acceptable.

How often do you release your content?

Our flagship publication is published biannually, once a semester. The Blog publishes new content on a much more frequent basis, as often as weekly during the academic year.

How can I contribute to the Blog?

We encourage you to apply for a Staff Writer position in order regularly write for the Blog. Please also keep an eye out for opportunities to be a guest contributor!

The BULR has accepted my writing submission! What are my responsibilities as a contributing author?

Congratulations! Our Associate Editors will be in touch to outline the editing process, timeline, and next steps. You can expect to have your paper thoroughly reviewed and edited for content in two separate rounds by our Associate Editors. The paper is then finalized by our Copy Editing and Design teams.

As an author, it is your responsibility to adhere to all revision deadlines in order to facilitate a smooth publication cycle. Upon your paper’s acceptance, you agree to maintain prompt communication with our team and engage with editor feedback, including but not limited to substantive argument revisions, length alterations, stylistic suggestions, and citation modifications.
